Lee's Gun Books
23 April 2007
In line with increasing our knowledge base, as started in this week's Tactical Equipment Evaluation, this week's recreational review is going to cover some gun maintenance information / manuals available from a gentleman named Lee Lynch. Having stepped into the 21st century, Lee makes his manuals available in soft copy on CD. As much as the current crop of gun "experts" all seem to be over fifty (and that's not criticism - I admire them for having survived in their choice of combat arms for so long) the next generation is more computer comfortable and happy to have reference material on CDs or in digital copy. Such a format certainly increases ease of transport and storage. One laptop: many reference manuals.
The books are actually produced in ebook format requiring installation of included software on your computer. I was surprised at this as I've come to expect most information distributed on CDs to be in Acrobat Reader (*.pdf) format. Instead, when you read an ebook on your computer it's much like reading a paper book in front of you. You turn pages back and forth. The pictures are in color and detail is shown clearly. You can print parts if you need to, but I discourage printing an entire manual off the CD. That would take lots of paper and you'd never get it compiled the right way for proper reading.
Prior to installation you are required - as with any other proprietary software - to acknowledge the user license and agreement. You tell your computer where to install the software although recommendations are made by the system installation software.
On the recreational shooting side of the house, Lee makes three CDs / manuals that I consider of value. Of course, depending on your outlook about the weapons, they may have a place in your duty knowledge base. The three CDs / manuals are:
- A Comprehensive Gun Cleaning Guide: A Gunsmiths's Perspective
- Smith & Wesson Revolver: Disassembly, Maintenance and Assembly Manual
- Smith & Wesson Sigma Series: Disassembly, Maintenance & Reassembly Manual
Now, taking a look at those, obviously every shooter of handguns can stand to benefit from the gun cleaning guide. There is just so much information out in the industry about what's the best method, what's the best solvent, what's the best bore brush, what's the best lubricant... and so on. To get a straight forward plain language guide to revolver and pistol cleaning without an industry imposed prejudice is refreshing.
Have you ever taken the sideplate off of your Smith & Wesson Revolver? I did that once... and didn't have a clue what I was doing. This ebook certainly would have come in handy back then (it was two decades ago). For the avid revolver fan, this book is ideal and will provide a greater understanding of what works how inside the guts of the weapon. Having such information will also help you to diagnose problems you experience when shooting your revolver.
And finally, the Manual about the Smith & Wesson Sigma. I don't know how many people own these guns but I can't say I ever have or intend to. I don't have a problem with the weapon, but if you want a Glock... buy a Glock. I know there are differences, but I don't think they are signficant enough to justify spending my money on a Sigma. If YOU happen to have or want a Sigma, this ebook will be helpful to you in understanding how it works, how to maintain it and how to diagnose any problems you experience during your shooting experience.
Lee's Gun Books currently makes four other ebook manuals as well. They include:
- Springfield Armory XD Disassembly, Maintenance & Reassembly Manual
- 1911 Disassembly, Maintenance & Reassembly Manual
- The Total Glock Disassembly, Maintenance and Assembly Manual
- Smith & Wesson Pistol Disassembly, Maintenance and Assembly Manual
I will provide a more thorough review of those four in an upcoming tactical equipment review article. In the meantime, if you're a recreational shooter, or if you take a handgun with you on your hunting outings, you should check into the books reviewed above from Lee's Gun Books. Knowledge is never a bad thing. More is better. Expand your mind...
BE SAFE!
I have a comment on this article.
