New Products for the LEO/Military End User

I recently came across some new and innovative products and seminars and I wanted to share them with the readership. I received the new Victorinox/Swiss Army Rescue Tool from the company for testing. The “tool is based on their rugged, larger knife frame and includes some excellent force entry equipment for use at a scene of an emergency.
The Rescue Tool has been developed by Victorinox in close collaboration with rescue and safety services. It can be operated with gloves and has luminescent handles. Crate opener and one-hand blade can be locked in place through Liner Lock.
The Rescue Tool has some slick features such as a replaceable window breaker/punch, and a disc saw for cutting through shatterproof glass. The standard high quality Victorinox/Swiss Army standard is evident throughout the entire construction of the Rescue Tool and for a listed price of $80.00 it is more than affordable for the forward thinking EMS or Military user. For more information on the Rescue Tool, you can visit the Victorinox/Swiss Army website at www.swissarmy.com.
Chris Cashbaugh and the folks at SOG were nice enough to send me some different pieces of equipment from their “Fusion” series for test and evaluation. SOG premise in creating the Fusion series from my understanding was to create some heavy duty; task oriented edged tools that were available for purchase at reasonable prices. The Fusion line products that I received were all well made, well thought out, and provided excellent performance.
Based on the Lagana Style / Vietnam Tomahawk, the new Fusion Tactical Tomahawk is an extreme evolution of the original, which was considered one of the more unusual weapons of its day. Today there is a real need for a versatile tool for breaching operations, excavation, obstacle removal, extraction, and other utility applications. The 420 stainless steel head with Hard cased coating is mounted to the hardwood handle with heavy-duty bolts and a steel ferrule to keep the wood from splitting. Side hammer checkering insures precise placement when pounding. The cord wrapped handle provides good purchase even when wet and the supplied nylon sheath is durable and pragmatic. While maybe not as robust and austere as say the K5 Tactical Hawk, the Fusion Tomahawk rivals anything in its class. Lightweight, well manufactured, and tough. With an MSRP of 60 bucks, you cannot go wrong.
According to SOG, the Fusion battle/throwing ax evokes its origins from medieval times, which some might consider to be the present. Whether used as a target ax, SWAT tool, universal back up, or hung above the fireplace; it is very effective. The pike in the back is upswept for better target penetration. Size and heft are balanced for optimum swing control. The handle is sculpted from heavy duty black Pakka wood and the entire solid blade is protected with SOG’s Hardcased coating. Nylon sheath included. MSRP is $50.00
With SOG’s Hardcased coating, the Jungle Primitive is durable and comfortable with a molded Kraton handle that features Digi-Grip™, a way to guarantee gripping power where you need it. One can instantly turn the Primitive into a small machete, limb saw, or hammer. Includes a Nylon sheath with utility pouch. This is a big fixed blade with many different uses. With an overall length past 15 inches and weighing in at 14 ounces, this knife suits itself well when you need a big tough knife with a cost that makes it easily expendable of need be. The knife also comes in straight edge and satin finish.SOG lists the cost of the knife at $60.00.
I was recently invited by a close friend of mine to attend the Critical Edge~Rescue Tool Course at Modern Warrior in Lindenhurst, New York. Modern Warrior has long been regarded as one of the premier police defensive tactics institutes and I was eager to finally attend one of their courses.
Owner and founder of Modern Warrior, Phil Messina, was the primary instructor for the course. Phil is former NYPD, a lifelong martial artspractitioner, and a police defensive tactics master. Phil combines an incredible knowledge base and a bundle of real life experience in his delivery of excellent life saving technique. It was obvious from the onset of the course that Phil did an immense amount of due diligence and preparation in formulating this course. Phil took great pains to make sure he included (amongst dozens of other topics relevant to the course topic) information pertaining to carrying edged tools/weapons in a myriad of geographical locations, laws pertaining to concealed carry, the intended use and misuse of edged tools, and a well thought out, comprehensive defensive tactics piece using an edged tool as a weapon if needed. This was the first time I have attended one of Modern Warrior’s offerings but I can tell you it won’t be the last. Evident was the fact that Phil and his staff are a group of top notch warrior- instructors and are definitely not of the same ilk as those who instruct and only purport to be warriors. Needless to say, I was definitely impressed and HIGHLY recommend readers who are fond of edged tool carry to attend one of Modern Warrior’s Critical Edge training seminars. The course is one day in duration and Phil provides a mobile training capability for those who cannot travel to New York. Modern Warrior offers many outstanding programs for military and law enforcement personnel and more information can be found at www.modernwarrior.com
