ASAP Nutritional Supplement

Our online discussion forum is back up and running. If you have any comments or questions about this review, please post them here!

In my much younger days (before I was old enough to go in the service) I remember partaking of C-rations. I also remember thinking that, as good as I thought they were, carrying them around wouldn’t be fun. All that water content made them heavy. So, what came along? MREs. Little to no water; easier to hump; not necessarily easier to eat or digest (matter of opinion and preference). The trend continues as companies create either meal bars or nutritional supplements you can add to your water to create the equivalent of a meal. The ASAP (Any Situation Always Prepared) high protein meal replacement supplement is such an item. Let’s take a look at it...

I received three of these units for testing and evaluation. My first thought was, "Wow. They made food even smaller." My second thought was, "I wonder if it tastes better than an MRE?"

When I opened the first package I was struck by how the contents - essentially a chocolate flavored powder - smelled exactly like hot chocolate mix. I mean EXACTLY. If you've ever had Swiss Miss hot chocolate on a cold winter's day, you know what the ASAP product smells like. It even looks the same.

To prepare it you:
  • Tear off the obvious end above the ziplock closer
  • open it at the ziplock point
  • add ten to twelve ounces of water (no more than twelve: see below)
  • zip it shut
  • hold it firmly at both ends
  • shake vigorously for thirty seconds (at a minimum)
If you've shaken it sufficiently you get a drink that looks like hot chocolate - only it's whatever temperature the water was when you added it. I strongly recommend using heated water if you can. This mix tastes better as hot chocolate than it does as a chocolate milk wanna-be substitute. That's not a negative comment. Just think about how hot chocolate tastes and what texture it has after it's gotten cold. It's just not the same.

Let's put that in perspective though: this meal replacement nutritional drink isn't meant for fireside enjoyment while you're on a camping trip. Sure, it could serve that purpose. But it was developed and designed to be a food substitute when:

1) It was all you could carry, or
2) You're otherwise out of food.

Given those circumstances ANYTHING that provides you nutrition and doesn't make you yack is good. ASAP, tasting like hot chocolate, is a good thing.

A single ASAP package measures just under 10" long by about 4.5" wide. Thickness runs about 3/8" with thicker and thinner points depending on how the powder shifts inside. Weight is less than a quarter pound - not even three ounces actually. Carrying ten of these around would add less than two pounds to your total load. It's the water that weighs.

For the nutrition wise / conscious out there, here's a list of the information. Remember that one package equals one serving.

  • 325 calories
  • 5 g fat
  • 7 mg cholesterol
  • 40g carbohydrate
  • 30g protein
  • 96% lactose free
For the following list of vitamins and supplements, one package of ASAP contains 50% of the recommended daily allowance:
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
  • Thiamin
  • Riboflavin
  • Niacin
  • Vitamin B6
  • Folic Acid
  • Vitamin B12
  • Biotin
  • Pantothenic acid
  • Calcium
The final item I looked at before searching for a price was the storage life. According to the published material you can store an unopened ASAP Package for up to 130 months depending on temperature. Higher temps mean shorter shelf life. At 120F you can only store an ASAP package one month. But at 80F you can store it for 76 months (more than six years) and at 60 degrees you can store it 130 months (more than 10 years).

Knowing all that then, I looked for pricing. Being sold through Going Loud Tactical Outfitters, you can order a box (20 packages) of ASAP for $59.95 - or $2.99 (roughly) per package / meal. That's a pretty good price for a meal in such a convenient package - and they're easy enough to store for emergency preparedness too. Check them out!
